Ever felt nauseous when travelling by air? Or experienced your head suddenly becoming heavy?
Or got dizzy? Or suddenly broke out in a cold sweat? Or felt a hum in your ear with your ears getting blocked,not just during take-off or landing?


If you're nodding to any or most of these symptoms, then you're suffering from airsickness.

 

 

 What is airsickness?

It is motion sickness which one experiences while travelling by air and is considered a normal response in healthy indivi'duals as well. Even the most frequent of fliers experience this some time or the other, or in some way or other.
The most common symptoms of this are nausea, loss of appetite, cold sweating, vomiting, vertigo, shortness of breath, confusion and drowsiness, headache and increased fatigue.
However, everyone may experience these in their own way.

Why do you feel airsick?

Fatigue, stress and anxiety are major contributors to airsickness. Most people have a fear of heights, which could also lead to a fear of flying.

Sometimes, a trauma caused by a bad experience can trigger airsickness. Also, if you are on, medication you may become prone to air sickness.

 

A woman may suffer airsickness if she is menstruating or is preganant.

What can you do to minimise it ?.


Take a carbonated drink.

Reserve a seat on the wingside as you will feel less turbulence here.

If your child is prone to airsickness, bring along his/her favourite toys or puzzles to distract him/her.

Wear comfortable clothes.

As soon as you sit, tilt the air vent towards your face.


Though a variety of medicines are often prescribed, side effects and/or withdrawal symptoms from these medicines can be very severe.

More over these drugs do not cure airsickness but only suppress the feeling for some time.
