Cars left parked illegally on pavements or by the sides of roads will be towed away, said the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) yesterday.
Vehicles will be taken to depots and violators will face stiff penalties under the latest crackdown. An awareness campaign is to be launched to inform motorists of the plan, and how it will work.
.
The announcement was made at a meeting between the RTA and Dubai Police.
Maitha bin Adai, CEO of the RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency, called on motorists to avoid parking their vehicles in a "haphazard" manner on pavements or at roadsides. She said inconsiderate motorists undermined the safety of pedestrians and other road users and spoiled the general appearance of the city.
"It is important to intensify the campaign to curb unauthorised parking in city districts and heavily populated residential suburbs," said Bin Adai.
"Parking on pavements and within a right-of-way jeopardises the safety of road users. Motorists are therefore requested to park their vehicles in the spaces designated for this purpose."
She said parking on driveways leading to building entrances caused more problem: "Such driveways are intended to serve residential and commercial buildings and allow entry, exit, loading and unloading, and are not intended for parking.
The meeting decided a survey should be carried out to identify areas where illegal parking was a particular problem. The findings will then assist in drawing up further solutions, such as the provision of additional parking. The research will be carried out jointly by the RTA, the police and other bodies.
The officials discussed other issues such as streamlining the process for towing away vehicles parked on a right of way. It was agreed there should be a large-scale awareness campaign targeting motorists and other road users to explain the risks of illegal parking on roadside.
The RTA will soon start towing away vehicles parked within the right of way without legal justification or an official permit to a depot specially prepared for this purpose. Details of the procedures and the implementation mechanism will be explained in the campaign.
