Dubai: The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has advised residents to buy Nol Cards for the Dubai Metro well in advance to avoid a last minute rush at ticket counters at Metro stations. "We suggest people interested in using the [Metro] buy their Nol Cards well in advance because we are expecting a huge rush during the initial days [following] the Metro launch on September 9," a senior RTA official said. Nol Silver cards allowing passengers use of both the Metro and other modes of public transport are available at different locations. They are valid not only for the Metro but also for public buses, water buses and Metro parking lots. There are four Nol cards on offer. These are the Nol Silver, Nol Blue, Nol Gold and Nol Red cards. However, only the Nol Silver card has been made available so far. "The rest of the Nol cards will be launched later but there will be Nol Silver and Nol Red Card ticket (which is valid for a single journey) available at the time of the Metro's launch," the official said. The Nol Silver card will be for use in the economy class of the Metro. It can also be used on public buses and water buses. "We will launch the Nol Gold card [to be used for travel in the VIP compartment] just before the Metro operation starts," he said. The Nol Silver card is currently on offer and being sold to interested members of the public. However, the cards can only be activated on the day the Metro is launched. The RTA official noted that the roll-out of the Nol Silver card had been made according to preset time frames marking the first phase of the Unified Automated Fare Collection project. This card will be the one used the most by passengers. The Nol card is considered the best option for commuters interested in using public transportation in Dubai. Commuters can use the Metro, public buses and water buses. Silver Nol cards will be available for mass transport users at different sales outlets across the city including the five public bus stations, eight marine transport stations, and the nine RTA Customer Service Centres. The minimum price of the Nol Silver card is Dh20. This includes the cost of the fare, set at Dh14, and the cost of producing the card, which is Dh6. The card will be valid for five years.
