Dubai: Female expatriates who are under the sponsorship of their mothers, brothers, uncles or other family members can now work in the country, according to a new Ministry of Labour rule. Earlier only female expatriates under the sponsorship of their father or husband were allowed to work in the UAE. Under the labour law no expatriate are allowed to work in the country unless they obtain a work permit and labour card. Humaid Bin Deemas, Acting Director General at the Ministry, told Gulf News, with the new decision females who are under the sponsorship of family members such as the mother, brother or uncles can work in the country after acquiring a labour card. "The aim of the new rule which give an opportunity for this category of people to work in the country which will increase the productivity of the local workforce and thus to lessen our dependency on foreign recruitment," said Bin Deemas. The UAE laws do not allow expatriates' families to sponsor a male after the age of 18 years, but females can continue to be sponsored until they get married, when the sponsorship is usually transferred from her father to her husband. While the common practice is that females are sponsored by either their fathers or husbands, mothers in certain professions such as doctors, engineers and pharmacists can also become sponsors. In exceptional cases, brothers and uncles can also sponsor female relatives. "The rule will be applicable for any female who have a valid residency in the country regardless of the kin relationship of her sponsor. I have personally come across cases who are under the sponsorship of her brother or uncle why should they be prohibited from working in the country," said Bin Deemas. Earlier, some cases in this category used to gain exemption from the Ministry, but with the implementation of the new rule this is no longer necessary, according to Bin Deemas. Your comments This is very good sign to those ladies who is now depending on others. Abdul Hanan Dubai,UAE Posted: July 17, 2009, 17:18 Many female expatriates will definitely benefit from this new rule which will reduce the country's dependency to a certain extent on foreign workforce recruitment. We all look forward to the implementation of this new rule at the earliest. Surendran V.K Abu Dhabi,UAE Posted: July 17, 2009, 17:12 I think this is a great decision. It should be implemented soon so that country can utilise lots of skilled people who just can't work because they are just on the sponsorship of their uncles or brothers. I'm sure this decision will have a positive impact on the market. Ali Dubai,UAE Posted: July 17, 2009, 17:06 It is really a good move. Such rules will reduce the unnecessary restrictions on employment for the people who are staying legally in the country. Tasawar Ahmad Khan Dubai,UAE Posted: July 17, 2009, 14:48 This is a very good dicision made by the government of Dubai. With the financial situation and the expenses we will be benifited with one more income, if my daughter can work, as she is on my sponsorship. Rebecca De Rose Dubai,UAE Posted: July 17, 2009, 14:14
