Dubai: A program launched by Dubai Traffic department, “We are all police,” registered 2,200 fines during the month of March, which were contributed by phone calls and involvement from the public in spotting traffic violations and reporting it to the traffic department.
According to Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zaffein, Director of the Dubai traffic department, the department registered around 1,342 calls from the public and police officers about a variety of traffic violations. While 858 fines were registered by the radar cameras scattered across the city, he said. The program was initially part of the operations room department but has been recently transferred to the traffic department of Dubai Police which is responsible in answering the calls of people witnessing a traffic violation and which could endanger the safety of motorist and pedestrians. The department does not issue a fine from the first call; officers on duty call the violating person to get the details of their violation and whether they were driving the vehicle that was reported by the witness. If proven to have committed a violation the person will be given a warning; whereas, in the case a person commits the same violation again and was reported by an eyewitness then the traffic department issues a fine. As for false information with ill-intentions calls, Brigadier Al Zaffein said “without a doubt that for every rule there are exceptions and we have made sure to take into consideration every possible scenario.” The department investigates with the caller on their relation with the allegedly violating motorist or to ensure that the witnessed incident is in fact a violation in the first place, he said. “In case it is proven the caller made a complaint with the intention to seek revenge or with bad intentions they might be involved in a false report case. This is done so that no one undermines the duty of a police officer,” said Brigadier Al Zaffein. The sole aim of this program is to get the public involved in becoming dynamic individuals in collaborating with the police to limit traffic violations in the city, he said.
